A Middle East expert has urged community members to "oppose lies about Israel".

Lawyer Andrew White was addressing the Israel in Focus conference at the Israel embassy hosted by StandWithUs UK and attended by 60 young Jewish and non-Jewish professionals.

He gave examples of misinformation in the public arena regarding Israel, citing an article in The Economist claiming that Israeli traffic lights stop for less time for Arab traffic.

Pro-Israel blogger Chas Newkey-Burden offered a masterclass on effective advocacy for Israel via new media such as Twitter and Facebook. Israeli ambassador Ron Prosor also spoke.

Michael Dickson, Israel director of StandWithUs, said Israel faced "a continual battle, one that is fought in the media, on university campuses and in the court of public opinion.

"Addressing this threat requires a constant development of our strategies. We must train our supporters to use education to counteract the singling out of the state of Israel."
