Heritage plea over care site

articlemain

The Jewish Heritage UK director has joined the campaign to stop the total demolition of the former Jewish Maternity Hospital site in a Tower Hamlets housing project.

Sharman Kadish this week wrote to developers the Peabody Trust, arguing that the "the historic significance to the Jewish community has not been fully appreciated".

She suggested the developers "accommodate retention of the well-built cottages" on the Underwood Road site, possibly for warden residences.

Ms Kadish added: "We would like to see an English Heritage blue plaque affixed to the restored façade."

The campaign to save the buildings is spearheaded by local historian Tom Ridge, who has launched an online petition to present to the council and the developers.

Peabody has said it will be consulting with "all members of the local community in the development of this project".
