A fresh chapter in the lengthy history of the Hackney and East London Synagogue was the consecration of its Triangle Road premises by Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks.

The shul’s Rev Naftali Tiefenbrun and emeritus minister Alan Greenblat were among more than 70 guests at the celebratory brunch.

With its origins in the 19th century, the United Synagogue congregation is one of the oldest Orthodox Ashkenazi communities. It moved two years ago to the Triangle Road site, half-a-mile from its previous premises in Brenthouse Road, which served the congregation for 120 years.

The shul’s Stephen Brook said the move had initially been “tough, when you consider the average age of our community is in the 70s. But they stuck at it and we are now growing with many younger visitors enjoying the quite unique atmosphere at our shul.”

Lord Sacks said the event gave participants “an opportunity to both reflect on the extraordinary historic past of the community as well as celebrate the new premises. I am sure the community will continue to go from strength to strength.”

US president Stephen Pack was happy the organisation had helped the congregation “through this important move”.
