Global aid charity Tzedek is urging supporters to set aside some Chanucah gift-giving to help impoverished communities in Africa. Donations can purchase classroom resources, chicks, or even "poo flies", which enable Kenyan farmers to fertilise human excrement.
More than 100 of the £10-to-£20 gifts have already been bought. Tzedek chief executive Jude Williams said they would make a "tangible difference to lives".
The project was about "giving people resources to help them help themselves. A woman who has some chicks and a bit of training will help her family and her community, so there's a real knock-on effect." It was also intended to educate young people about global inequality, "so you can have the conversation with your kids about how most of the world lives".
