August 16, 2017 16:28Scotland’s only Jewish school, Calderwood Lodge Primary in Glasgow, moved into new premises this week in a ground-breaking £17 million project.
Calderwood Lodge will share the Newton Mearns campus, in the heart of the Jewish community, with Catholic primary St Clare’s.
The project has been delivered by East Renfrewshire Council to provide Calderwood Lodge with a more suitable location and to meet the need for increased provision for Catholic education in the area.
A shared central amphitheatre, outdoor obstacle trails and sports pitches are features of the joint campus.
Calderwood head Marion Carlton noted that the building design “has been based on feedback from parents and representatives from both faith communities. I know it will provide us with a fantastic learning environment.
“Bringing together these two faith communities on one campus is creative and innovative and I have no doubt we will all reap the benefits from this approach. We are all so excited about getting started in our new home.”
Councillor Paul O’Kane, East Renfrewshire convener for education and equalities, added: “While both St Clare’s and Calderwood Lodge will undoubtedly benefit from the fantastic individual learning environments, it is the shared areas which most excite me. By sharing ideas and knowledge, all pupils at this joint campus will enjoy an enriched learning environment.”
Calderwood Lodge is viewed as the jewel in the crown of Glasgow Jewry and is vital to its continuity. Community leaders say families move to the city from the Highlands and Aberdeen so their children can attend the school. More than half its pupils are Jewish.
