Volunteers have rallied round to clean up a neglectd old Jewish cemetery at Florence Place in Brighton.
The initiative was organised by Hove Hebrew Congregation member Adam Bomzer. "I came across a photo of the cemetery on a Facebook page called Brighton through the Ages. I realised the importance of the place and felt obligated to clean it up," he said.
He posted a message on the local Jewish community Facebook page and several people provided information about the cemetery, which has not been used for 50 years, and wanted to help. One of the volunteers, Ivan Lyons, organised the clearing up, during which dozens of sacks were filled with weeds and rubbish. "Even though the cemetery has not had a burial for many years, the community still has the responsibility for its upkeep," he said.
The cemetery, a Grade ll listed site, houses the burial plot of the UK's first Jewish chief constable - Henry Solomon - who was murdered in 1844.
