An "overwhelming" response to a survey of Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue's membership will help its leaders to develop a future strategy.

Chairman Mike Cohen reported that the target of 400 replies was exceeded by 175, with respondents representing 30 per cent of the community. Although it was an online survey, there were drop-in sessions at the shul for those without computer access.

"In a typical marketing exercise, a 10 per cent response would be considered good," he said, "so this level of response is very encouraging.

"It shows that whether people are positive or negative, they have an interest in making things better."

Members were asked why they felt it important to belong to a synagogue - and why they had joined BES in particular. Other questions included whether they considered membership value for money, which facilities they used and their experience of religious services.

Mr Cohen said the shul's strategic planning committee was analysing the detail and would be making recommendations. The feedback had also proved invaluable to the selection advisory board tasked with recruiting a senior rabbi and rebbetzin.
