A petrol station could be demolished to make way for a synagogue for a strictly Orthodox Manchester congregation. Shomrei Hadass hopes to move into part of a new development proposed for a Texaco garage site in Prestwich. The development would also include shops.

The growing community of around 80 members worships in a building around 20 minutes away on foot, and lifelong congregant Leonard Seitler, 47, said the proposed site would be more convenient for the majority. "The plan is to move to a much better location for the future of the shul." It could also help to boost numbers.

The synagogue would take up the first floor of the proposed development. A kosher supermarket is likely to be among shops on the ground floor.

It is hoped the planning application will be approved by the end of the year.
