The long-established Higher Crumpsall Synagogue in Manchester is threatened with closure because of a financial crisis.

Members were told at Sunday's AGM that the cost of maintaining the Grade II listed building exceeded income. Membership has declined to 175 from 500 at its peak. President Sholom Finn said afterwards that "inevitably something will have to alter. Whether we have to close or amalgamate, all I can say is nothing has been decided."

Higher Crumpsall was listed in 2006 and received a £130,000 refurbishment grant from English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The current congregation is the result of an amalgamation between Higher Crumpsall and Higher Broughton. Merger talks with the larger Holy Law community foundered a few years ago and Higher Crumpsall no longer maintains its own minister. Rabbi Arnold Saunders officiates on an ad hoc basis.
