A synagogue has been handed a planning contravention notice by a local authority that will investigate Jewish businesses being run from its premises and look into an ongoing dispute over an extension.

Trafford Council will serve the notice on Sale and District Hebrew Congregation, in south Manchester, after residents complained that the synagogue installed shipping containers modified as offices. Neighbours say the containers are unsightly.

At a planning meeting last week, the council said it will investigate whether use of the buildings for an accountant, who also does the synagogue’s accounts, and an online business that provides Jewish gifts and artefacts, are in keeping with permitted use of the containers.

Planning officers said the synagogue businesses “appear to be ancillary to the role of the synagogue and therefore compliant with the planning permission.

“However, to assist the council in making a full and proper assessment of the use of the containers, it is recommended that a planning contravention notice is served.”

The council also ordered the synagogue to conduct landscaping and painting.
Synagogue secretary Mike Clyne said his community was not looking to cause any problems and gets on well with residents.

“One of the neighbours is not happy. We will be able to come to an arrangement with the council and we will make the suggested minor adjustments so we can all get on happily.”
