Sari Schochet, daughter of Mill Hill Synagogue’s Rabbi Yitzchak and Chanie Schochet, had always planned to share her batmitzvah with the community she grew up in.

But when the restrictions during the pandemic put paid to any party plans, Sari and her mother came up with a different way to involve the congregation.

So in addition to a Zoom ceremony to which 400 people tuned in, they baked 300 challot and had them taken in special Shabbat bags to housebound community members.

“It wasn’t a party but it was a much more meaningful way for me to celebrate,” Sari said.

Mrs Schochet added: “The batmitzvah coincided with the United Synagogue’s 150th anniversary so we decided to make 300 challot to distribute to 150 members.”
