Businessmen, tourists and other visitors will once again be able to enjoy a meal at Bevis Marks Synagogue in the City of London.
Restaurant 1701 — named after the date of the founding of Britain’s oldest synagogue — opened this month on the site, which has been vacant for nearly a year-and-a-half. The previous occupant, still known as Bevis Marks the Restaurant, moved to another location.
Open from breakfast to dinner under the Sephardi Kashrut Authority, Restaurant 1701 combines fine dining with a homage to the culinary heritage of the diaspora. It offers sophisticated reinterpretations of Jewish dishes from around the world.
1701 was opened by the owners of Adafina, the St John’s Wood kosher deli. Co-founder Natalie Salama-Levy said the focus was “deliberately the world of Jewish cuisine. There’s hundreds of years of culinary heritage that many Jewish people are not even aware of, let alone those outside of the community.”
