A proposed £40 million redevelopment of Jewish Care's Princess Alexandra home in Stanmore has been approved by Harrow Council, subject to certain conditions.
Features of the plans are a 64-bedroom nursing and dementia care home, 16 assisted living studios and 48 independent living flats. The proposals also incorporate a community day centre, leisure and well-being facilities, a restaurant and a synagogue.
The new premises will be built alongside the existing home, so residents will not be uprooted during the construction process.
Jewish Care chief executive Simon Morris said the council decision was "great news and is yet another step in the right direction for our ambitious plans to provide a range of accommodation and support to meet the needs of the community. However, we are a long way off from any building works starting. We have an enormous fundraising challenge ahead of us before we are able to develop these exciting plans further."
The hope is that the council's conditions can be satisfied by the end of August, so that planning permission is finalised.
