The death of a Jewish student has shocked south Manchester, with 500 people attending his funeral.
Jonathan Jayson, 20, a student at Liverpool Community College, died last Wednesday at the Grand Central student accommodation in Liverpool.
His family said a post-mortem indicated that he had died from heart failure.
Mr Jayson, from Didsbury, south Manchester, was a former Manchester King David High School pupil and had begun a law course just two weeks ago.
An inquest was opened and adjourned last Friday by the Liverpool coroner. It is set to reopen on January 30. Merseyside police are not treating the death as suspicious.
Parents, Dinah — a consultant child psychiatrist — and Gordon — a professor of oncology at Christie Hospital — are members of Didsbury’s Sephardi Shaare Hayim synagogue.
Shaare Hayim’s Rabbi Amir Ellituv said the death had been “a huge shock to the community.”
His mother Dinah said: “Jonathan was an inspiration to others. Only now I’ve discovered he was a motivational speaker on addiction to hundreds of young people in addiction-recovery groups in Liverpool and Warrington”.
