Claudia Winkleman’s daughter is in hospital after her Halloween costume caught fire leaving her badly burnt.

Eight-year-old Matilda’s witch outfit went up in flames when she brushed past some candles inside a pumpkin while trick-or-treating on Friday night.

The Strictly Come Dancing presenter missed Saturday and Sunday’s shows to stay by the bedside of her daughter.

Matilda is said to have been in a group supervised by adults when her witch’s cape caught fire, and was pushed to the ground and rolled over in an attempt to put out the flames.

Paramedics treated her at the scene in West London and she is believed to have suffered burns to her leg.

Miss Winkleman and her husband Kris Thykier, 42, said in a statement: “Our daughter was involved in an accident on Friday night while celebrating Halloween. She is having the best care possible and we are hopeful of a full recovery.

“We would like to thank everyone who has been so supportive and particularly the NHS doctors, nurses and staff who have been absolutely incredible.”

Ms Winkleman is the daughter of Eve Pollard, Jewish former editor of the Sunday Mirror and the Sunday Express.
