The Joely Bear Appeal will hold its 60th blood donor sesssion at Borehamwood & Elstree Synagogue this weekend.

The appeal was launched in January 1995 in memory of Joel Renak, a Jewish child who died aged four from a rare form of liver cancer.

His family have been campaigning ever since for more blood and stem cell donors.

Joel’s parent, Leigh and Lisa Renak, are urging Jews to donate blood and stem cells to ensure people within the community who need donations will always find a match.

Through their efforts over 8,000 blood donations have been made and over 1,000 new donors have been added to the bone marrow register.

The charity also raises money for making children’s stays in hospital more comfortable; supplying games and educational resources.

The donor session will be held at Borehamwood & Elstree Synagogue, Croxdale Road, from 9:30am-4:30pm on Sunday.
