Congregations around the country are requesting extra volunteers to help with the explosion of events being organised for Shabbat UK.

According to organiser Rabbi Daniel Rowe, 300 additional madrichim have been asked for.

"Communities need the extra support. The overall number of madrichim, including people already in the communities, will be around 1,000," he said.

The national celebration of Shabbat was initiated by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, with the inaugural event last year attracting more than 100,000 people.

This year's events, on October 23-24, is set to involve even more participants.

"Everywhere, we've been hearing about people doing more stuff, or stuff where they weren't last year," said Rabbi Rowe. "Both the quality and quantity of events have increased."
