Boris Johnson has said an exclusive JC poll showing that 69 per cent of British Jews plan to vote Conservative is the result of the party’s work for the community.
The London mayor said the results were “great news” for Tories as he campaigned in Golders Green on Wednesday morning.
Mr Johnson said: “The poll reflects the support we have given to the community. But we never take any vote for granted and we must continue to work to combat hate crime and issues such as the community’s housing needs.”
On Tuesday, the results of the JC poll, conducted by Survation, revealed that only 22 per cent of British Jews plan to vote Labour.
While David Cameron has substantial personal support among the community, with 64 per cent saying he had the best attitude towards Jews, Labour leader Ed Miliband was preferred by only 13 per cent.
Mr Johnson, visiting the area to support the Tory’s Finchley and Golders Green candidate Mike Freer, met members of the Jewish community in stores including Kosher Kingdom and a Norwood charity shop.
He also posed for pictures with staff from Jewish Care’s Maurice and Vivienne Wohl Campus.
The mayor said he would challenge Transport for London on its plans to scrap the number 13 bus route which runs from Golders Green to Finchley Road. The JW3 Jewish community centre criticised TfL’s plan.
Mr Johnson denied he was gearing up for a potential Conservative leadership campaign if Mr Cameron losses the election. He said he had not been on diet but had instead been “bingeing over Easter”.
