The Board of Deputies has condemned a fake statement being used by left-wing Twitter accounts to suggest the communal organisation sees supporting Palestine as antisemitic.
The made-up statement relates to the Batley & Spen by-election and complains that voters are citing Palestine as a reason for not voting Labour.
The fake quote reads: "It is disappointing voters in Batley & Spen are citing Palestine as a reason for not voting Labour on 1st of July.
"Kier Starmer should show better leadership by condemning these sentiments and instructing local activists to hold the people of Batley and Spen robustly to account for their antisemitic beliefs.”
A spokesperson for the Board of Deputies said: "We are disturbed by the reports that a fake quote on the Batley & Spen by-election, attributed to the Board of Deputies, has been circulating on Twitter.
“We have reported this to the platform and would suggest that those who have shared this false information delete it and in future take the necessary 20 seconds to check whether such a statement is real or not."
A total of 16 candidates will stand in the Batley and Spen by-election next month.
Tracy Brabin, who first won the seat for Labour in 2016 after the murder of Jo Cox, quit as an MP after being elected as West Yorkshire metro mayor.
Labour has selected the late Ms Cox's sister Kim Leadbeater as the party's candidate.
