Reverend Leslie Hardman - the Army chaplain who participated in the liberation of Bergen-Belsen and was Hendon Synagogue minister from 1946 to 1982 - died on Tuesday, aged 95.

Leading the tributes, United Synagogue chief executive Jeremy Jacobs said: "He was one of our most senior and most respected ministers, a man full of compassion who dedicated his life to our community."
Holocaust Educational Trust chairman Lord Janner recalled "an outstandingly supportive presence who did so much to lift the morale of survivors".

Rev Hardman's work with Holocaust survivors was recognised with an MBE in 1998.
