Auschwitz survivor Lily Ebert couldn’t hide her joy as she went on her first walk in a month after recovering from Covid-19.
“Thank god she made a really miraculous recovery,” her great-grandson Dov Forman, 17, told the JC on Friday.
“There were some really dark days and it was critical at one point, but the GP was absolutely amazing and came out every day to check on her and sorted out oxygen for us.”
The 97-year-old received her first vaccination dose in December but was diagnosed with the virus several weeks later. She received treatment at home.
“We didn’t want to send her to hospital because we thought we’ll never see her again and we set up a hospital at home and we had IV drips and oxygen.”
Ms Ebert is now a “tiny bit more tired than usual” and is able to walk, her great-grandson said.
He tweeted a picture of her walk, sparking 7 million views, thousands of messages, and words of encouragement from London Mayor Sadiq Khan and former chancellor Sajid Javid.
“She can’t thank anyone enough for the amount of love and kindness they show and we’re sure that it helped her get through it,” he said.

Ms Ebert, who was ill on her birthday last month, received a flood of supportive messages on the day including from celebrities and politicians.
“It gave her a smile even during the toughest times of the recovery and I think it helped push her through, and now she’s so happy she can carry on,” Mr Forman said.
Ms Ebert is expected to publish a book in the autumn, but details have not yet been revealed.
