Nottingham University student Asher Budwig is getting a taste for the business world with his banana-selling venture.
Twenty-year-old Mr Budwig has secured a stall at Camden market in north London, where he is selling frozen bananas covered in chocolate, and other delights. He came up with the venture, Banana Man, following his gap year in Guatemala in 2007 where he came across the concept of frozen bananas.
He tells People: “You take a banana, stick a chocolate lolly in it, freeze it and when a person wants to buy one, you add some chocolate sauces, sprinkles and whatever else. It’s simple, something a bit different and people seem to really like it.”
A former pupil at Immanuel College, Herts, he has spent the past three years working part time in food retail. He now spends his weekends on the stall, starting at 8am and finishing at around 7pm. “I hope I can inspire others in the Jewish community. Although there is a recession, there is still money to be made if you are in the right thing and if you really try.
“Many individuals at my age either choose to study at university or enter the world of work and I feel that my position has allowed me to do both these things and create a balance.” Mr Budwig grew up in Hampstead Garden Suburb.
