Amy Winehouse’s father has split up with his second wife after more than three decades together saying that the stress of watching his daughter struggle with addiction contributed to their break up.

Mitch Winehouse confirmed he has parted ways with Jane, the woman for whom he left first wife Janis for when Amy was only nine.

Mitch, 72, who met Jane in 1992, insisted the separation was amicable and said his marriage started to be pressured during Amy’s battles with drug and alcohol addiction.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Mitch said he did what he could to help his daughter including making late night trips to see her. He explained: “I would get a call at 3am and run out at 4am.”

Mitch, a former London cabbie said he felt compelled to reassure his wife that his late night trips only involved his daughter, stressing: “I said to her: 'Listen! There are no other women!”

Mitch went on to say he hadn’t “made a public announcement” on his separation with Jane because he still runs the Amy Winehouse Foundation with her and Janis.

The charity, set up in September 2011, aims to help disadvantaged children and young people build their self-esteem and feel empowered, particularly those at risk of or dealing with addiction.

It also set up Amy's Place, a refuge which can house up to 16 young women at a time while they learn how to adapt to real life and maintain recovery after being in a rehabilitation facility.

Mitch met Jane when he was married to Janis and they began an affair. The 72-year-old never disguised his feelings for Jane and brought her home on Friday night for Jewish family suppers.

Janis initially paid no attention to the affair and referred to Jane as Mitch’s 'work wife' but eventually she had enough and confronted him about the relationship. Mitch and Janis divorced in 1993 and he and Jane married in 1996.

Years later, Mitch admitted that Janis forgave him and insisted they remained bonded by their desperate quest to save their daughter from her addictions.

He concluded: “None of us are perfect.“Jane was so even tempered, as was Janis. They need to be with me – I'm a Sagittarian tiger! Actually, we get on better. “We are all still friends and all still running the Foundation together.”
