The menorah was out early in this lighting, which took place a couple of days before Chanucah.
Pictured (here) with Israeli Ambassador Daniel Taub is Koji Sekimuzu, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organisation. It’s a UN-linked body and Israel is bidding for election to its council.

The menorah, placed in windows, was “the Jewish lighthouse”, the ambassador explained.

Meanwhile, the annual Downing Street Chanucah do on Wednesday was moved to an earlier teatime slot this year so as not to clash with the Board of Deputies dinner on the same day.

In the past, the event has required skilful diplomacy behind the scenes to decide which rabbis light the candles. But no need this time. With just one candle, it could only be the chief rabbi.
