Newlands and Northwood beat Chigwell and Hainault by 71 runs in a friendly.
The match was played in fair weather conditions and whilst the sky was generally cloudy, particularly throughout Chigwell’s innings, rain was never going to be a factor. The strip itself, and much of the outfield, was dry and dusty and variable bounce was certainly a factor throughout the day.
Newlands accumulated runs steadily throughout their innings with most of their batsmen chipping in. Old campaigner Benny Wolpe, a guest player for Chigwell the previous week, top-scored with 43.
Not for the first time this season, Chigwell’s bowlers let themselves down, giving away 36 runs in wides and no-balls in an extras total of 43.
Pick of the bowlers was Alex Katseph with figures of 1-22 from his seven overs, whilst the pick of the wickets was the caught behind taken by stand in wicket-keeper Kevin Sinclair off of the increasingly effective leg-spin bowling of Mike Myers.
Chigwell’s reply quickly went into meltdown. A procession of batsmen came and went, victims of some great bowling and catching and some injudicious strokeplay. At one point, the opening bowlers Jon Mymin and Mark Roma had reduced the home side to the abysmal position of 11-7.
Sinclair and Myers steadied the ship with a 100 run partnership. They applied themselves to the task in hand, played every ball on its merit and offered very little encouragement to the fielding side by way of chances or poor shot selection.
Sinclair eventually departed for 41 and Myers for 48, the latter becoming the highest scoring teenager in Chigwell’s history.
A Chigwell side, heavily depleted by the loss of players through holiday and injury, will aim to get back on track in all departments as quickly as possible. For Newlands, however, a deserved second win of the season.
Newlands and Northwood 194 for 9 from 35 overs
Benny Wolpe 43, Bob Luder 26 n.o
Michael Myers 2-45
Chigwell and Hainault 123 for 9 from 35 overs
Michael Myers 48, Kevin Sinclair 41
Jon Mymin 3-16, Mark Roma 3-18
