A Jewish-Palestinian organisation dedicated to encouraging female empowerment and social change was one of three groups honoured at the New Israel Fund dinner in central London on Sunday, which raised more than £375,000.

Mahapach-Taghir, taking its name from the Hebrew and Arabic words for upheaval, establishes learning centres for children from disadvantaged communities in Israel. Mothers are encouraged to take an active role and supported in pursuing their own studies.

Among those accepting the award was Mona Arok, an Israeli-Arab from the Galilee town of Yafa an-Naseriyye.

"I am a woman who got married at a very young age, without education,"she said. "Mahapach-Taghir gave me the opportunity to change. Today I am a college student and an activist in my community."
