A Jewish-Palestinian organisation dedicated to encouraging female empowerment and social change was one of three groups honoured at the New Israel Fund dinner in central London on Sunday, which raised more than £375,000.
Mahapach-Taghir, taking its name from the Hebrew and Arabic words for upheaval, establishes learning centres for children from disadvantaged communities in Israel. Mothers are encouraged to take an active role and supported in pursuing their own studies.
Among those accepting the award was Mona Arok, an Israeli-Arab from the Galilee town of Yafa an-Naseriyye.
"I am a woman who got married at a very young age, without education,"she said. "Mahapach-Taghir gave me the opportunity to change. Today I am a college student and an activist in my community."
There was recognition also for the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, dedicated to defending human rights cases in the Israeli courts and promoting human rights discourse.
Sharon Abraham-Weiss, its executive director, expressed gratitude for the award and NIF's "ongoing, unconditional support. You and I are engaged in a struggle for the soul of the state of Israel, for the soul of its democracy and the moral foundation on which it stands. This is a struggle that we have no choice but to win."
The third organision honoured was Zazim, which uses its online platform to create campaigns for social change.
