Controversy has broken out over a conference, jointly sponsored by the Lithuanian government, on the country's wartime record which is due to take place in London next week.

A petition expressing concern at the Lithuanian government's attitude to the Holocaust has been signed by among others Lord Janner, Denis McShane MP and Rabbi Barry Marcus, who organises Holocaust education trips.

The two-day conference on Lithuanian-Jewish relations, jointly organised by University College London's Institute of Jewish Studies, opens on Sunday along with a related exhibition at West London Synagogue.

Danny Ben-Moshe, associate professor of Victoria University in Australia, who plans to deliver the petition in London, accused the Lithuanian government of "being engaged in diminishing and distorting the Holocaust."
