It was for Allan Levene, a prominent member of the community, which was established in 1992. Rabbi Aaron Goldstein, senior minister of Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue, conducted the ceremony.

Jews’ Court is a Grade I-listed 14th century building thought to be the site of a medieval synagogue.

Rabbi Goldstein said leading the service gave him both a sense of history and a determination to transmit Judaism as a force for good.

“Allan Levene brought an incredible energy to growing the community,” he added. “While saddened by his death, his burial in these new grounds is a mark of his achievement.”

From the late 12th century until the general expulsion in 1290, Lincoln was an important Jewish centre. Notable residents included Aaron of Lincoln, a creditor of Henry II and major investor in Peterborough Cathedral, who was considered the wealthiest man in Norman England.
