The UK celebrates its most inspirational women, dinosaurs threaten west London and why shoppers should head to Nottingham
March 2, 2017 12:30With International Women’s Day on March 8, attractions around the country are celebrating girl power this month, from political activists to cultural stars and inspirational women from history.
The Museum of Liverpool is holding a series of free events from March 4-11, including Women at Sea on pioneering female sailors, plus talks from the women behind online magazine Gal-Dem on championing the writing of women of colour as well as creative workshops. www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk
Or follow in the footsteps of Kathleen Brown, a Newcastle suffragette, with a free city walk exploring her life. The tour on March 8 looks at the places where she demonstrated and was imprisoned, as well as the suffragette movement in Newcastle, before a Blue Plaque is unveiled in her honour. www.newcastlegateshead.com
And in Manchester, Wonder Women is part of the countdown to next year’s 100th anniversary of women first winning the right to vote, with exhibitions, events and tours across the city until March 12. Led by the People’s History Museum and Creative Tourist, the string of events includes a free guided tour of the museum on March 8, looking at how social justice campaigners Esther Roper and Eva Gore-Booth worked to bring about equal rights for working class women.
