Eastbourne may seem like a retirement home, but on many Saturday nights, it well and truly rocks.
It did exactly that one recent autumnal evening when Toploader, a local group made good, took to the al fresco beachside bandstand for their comeback gig.
And we saw it all from the balcony of this four-star hotel on the Grand Parade. Our modern en-suite executive room was wrapped around the corner of the striking white façade, allowing spectacular views through large picture windows over the beach and the pier.
It was great to be able to raid the mini-bar and watch the show from the comfort of our own ‘box’.
The after-show party was held in the sea-facing Coronet Bar, located just beyond the beige-tiled floor and dark wood of the reception area. At least the hangover was soothed in the spa’s steam aromatherapy room.
Overall, service and facilities meet 4-star expectations, although do watch out if you’re taking drinks up the lift. It stops with a jolt. The free Wi-Fi is really handy, and £4 buys you secure parking round the back. Bar snacks were surprisingly uninspired (mainly run-of-the mill sandwiches), though drinks are reasonably priced and their Movenpick ice-cream a treat.
If we had stayed another night, we could have dined on international cuisine at the Marine restaurant beneath its original ballroom ceiling, perched on red velvet chairs to the sounds of the resident pianist. And the show from our ‘box?’ A Neil Sedaka tribute.
