I've tried Downtown, Midtown and the Upper East, but my heart belongs to the Upper West.
And despite New York City's reputation for hotel prices as high as the skyscrapers, I maintain that if you look sensibly you can find seriously good value.
NYLO New York City is my latest find. Less than a year old, it's on the spot of my previous favourite, the strangely named On The Avenue - on 77th Street at Broadway.
Gutted from penthouse to basement bar, in its new incarnation it presses all the right buttons, mixing fashionable urban bare-brick design with the usual room luxuries, and the NYLO group's signature super-comfortable NYLO NYTE bed - along with proper pillows rather than the oft-found flimsy nonsense.
The WiFi is genuinely superfast WiFi and most rooms have balconies - although since it was minus 10 when I stayed I didn't venture out onto mine.
The common parts have sofas you'll sink into in the so-called LOCL bar-area-cum-foyer that's busy enough for an atmosphere but not so busy you can't find somewhere to sit down.
RedFarm, one of NYC's best Chinese, is one of the two in-house restaurants (along with Italian Serafina).
Service in the hotel is unobtrusive but efficient.
The amenities aren't up there with a five-star hotel, but they're more than enough for a very comfortable, enjoyable stay at a price that doesn't have you wondering how you'll afford to eat.
I was impressed, and for the moment NYLO New York City is my NYC default hotel.
Note: The hotel offers catering through Fairway, who can provide kosher breakfasts, lunches or dinners for up to 20 people.
