Only in the south of France, where the glamorous resorts of the French Riviera capture most visitors’ attention could the region of Languedoc-Roussillon stay so far under the radar. Because to those in the know, this part of south-west France is far more appealing with huge sandy beaches, stunning scenery and lower prices.

Better still is the chance to base yourself in a 12th century chateau, 15 minutes from the medieval wonder that is Carcassonne.

In the quaint and very ancient hilltop village of Aragon lies the splendid Chateau Asturias, 45 minutes from the somewhat more modern Perpignan airport.

Six bedrooms and a huge ground floor living space are cradled inside walls over 800 years old. Of course, there have been many modern adjustments which sit comfortably alongside the older elements, leaving luxury blended with a sense of living history.
