JC Stays: Atzaro Agroturismo hotel, Ibiza - The Jewish Chronicle

There’s long been more to Ibiza than its clubs, and with the island’s green landscapes tempting increasing numbers of visitors, it’s no surprise there’s also accommodation to entice those attracted by everything from locally sourced produce to wellness.

Designed to immerse visitors in Ibiza’s farming landscape, the 24-room Atzaro Agroturismo Hotel and Spa in the north-east of the island, has been built on the site of a former family farmhouse surrounded by more than 32,000 acres of land. Just 25 minutes from the airport, the luxury resort is aready a hit with string of celebrities too, from actress Goldie Hawn and her daughter Kate Hudson, to Penelope Cruz and Rihanna.

Once owned by the Guasch family matriarch, and converted by her grandchildren before being expanded from its original eight rooms, black and white family photos still line the walls as you pass through reception, where the old washing well has been transformed into an eye-catching feature.

Rooms, ranging from doubles to those with private pools, are spread across the site — and given how few rooms there actually are, guests rarely bump into one another. Mine comes complete with wooden shutters, beamed ceilings, a four-poster bed, and an outdoor bath shielded by an orange tree.

Quiet but for the sound of birds, it’s scented with orange blossom, a result of the citrus trees planted across the land. There are also herbs and seasonal fruits and vegetables, all grown to be used in the on-site restaurant or infused into the beauty products found in the rooms and spa.

The spa itself sits on the other side of the resort and making your way to it almost feels like navigating a very small but sweet village full of vegetable gardens, pavilions and terraces. Along the way, you pass the Atzaro restaurant, under British chef James Adams, where we eat the majority of our meals, plus a small boutique shop selling Ibizan boho treats from woven bags and beaded necklaces to colourful daywear.

There’s yoga at the gym, while the 43m freshwater pool is surrounded by orange trees and day beds — along with a sauna, hammam and massage rooms in the spa. My soothing facial turns out to be so soothing that I need to be woken up afterwards.

Local produce and sustainability are key to Atzaro’s ethos, without compromising on practicality or taste. The fresh, organic ingredients sourced on-site enhance every dish, including a delicious avocado salad and orange tart, while my cocktail straw turns out to have been made from recycled avocado peel.

Guests can take nature walks across the countryside, mountains and coastline, or try different cycling routes for various abilities, while the Old Town is only a 20-minute taxi ride away.

And it’s only the start for the Atzaro group on the island, with plans to increase the number of rooms further, and local restaurants within the brand, including the nearby Aubergine by Atzaro and Atzaro Beach.

Whether you’re looking for a taste of authentic Ibiza, a chance to indulge and switch off, or simply the celebrity seal of approval, this is the place to be.
