There were mixed fortunes for Israel's two leading tennis stars in the first round of the US Open.
Shahar Peer, who has slipped to 64 in the WTA rankings, recovered her best form to beat 32nd seed Agnes Szavay.
Peer, who last year crashed out in the first round at Flushing Meadow, swept past the young Hungarian 6-2, 6-2.
Peer was scheduled to play Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro (35) in the second round.
In the men's singles, Dudi Sela (35) was outplayed by Kevin Kim (100). The American beat Sela 6-3, 0-6, 6-2, 6-2. The defeat does not augur well for Israel's forthcoming Davis Cup semi-final in Spain.
Sela is also involved in the doubles, where he is partnering Yen Hsun-Lu of Taiwan. Jonathan Erlich has teamed up with South Africa's Jeff Coetzee.
Fifth seeds Andy Ram and Max Mirnyi, who are looking to win their first grand slam, take on Americans Scott Lipsky and Eric Butorac.
