Sharav, 27, overturned a 1-3 deficit to defeat 2008 winner Murphy 6-4.

“I have beaten some good players, like Stuart Bingham and Ali Carter, but that’s definitely the best,” declared world no. 121 Sharav.

“It’s the first time I have won here. To beat a player like Shaun is amazing.”

Sharav had not won a match in six previous attempts this season but registered four breaks of more than 50 and he held his nerve impressively in the latter stages to progress.

Murphy expressed surprise at the result and said: “I wasn’t at my best but didn’t play terribly. I didn’t see that coming as I’ve had a good season. Credit to Eden. He played fabulously and he took his chances.”

Born in Israel, Sharav was raised in Scotland after his parents divorced. However, despite spending most of his life in Alloa, he represents Israel, where his father still lives, on the professional tournament circuit.
