Ricky Curtis won the AJGC&S National Scratch tournament in Essex.
Abridge Golf Club hosted the re-instated competition, run under the auspices of the Association of Jewish Golf Clubs and Societies.
The competition, played in increasingly windy conditions that left competitors facing an extremely tough test, was played over two rounds. The leader after the morning round was Michael Charles of Hartsbourne with an excellent score of 73 followed by Curtis from Abridge on 75.
Conditions deteriortated during the afternoon round and after 36 holes Hartsbourne's Mark Cohen had returned the same score,77, as his morning effort. He shared first place with Curtis with an aggregate total of 154. This resulted in a three-hole playoff with Curtis edging out Cohen by one shot to to finish as the Champion Scratch golfer for 2011.
Not withstanding the withdrawal of three players over the weekend, the tournament featured nine competitors and was deemed "a success" by competition organisers. The course was well presented as befits the recent hosts of the regional qualifying for the Open. The Association aims to ensure that this tournament grows in stature in the coming years.
