As a Liverpool fan, it seems quite apt that I spent Passover in the Promised Land.
As I’m sure you can appreciate, there are quite exciting times for Reds fans, even us London-based ones, who can feel the reverberations on Merseyside.
An 11-match winning run has put the Pool on the cusp of something quite special.
My eardrums almost burst during the 3-2 win over Manchester City, where I joined hundreds of passionate Israelis packed into Bourbon in Herzliya, spearheaded by Yossi Elkrief, who I was told in the din is chairman of the Israel Liverpool Supporters Group.
You could’ve heard a pin drop during the minute of silence to remember the victims of Hillsborough, but after that the ale was flowing and I was almost hit by a flying schnitzel when Coutinho smashed home the winner. The rendition of the Mignolet song (to the tune of The Lion Sleeps Tonight) was particularly amusing.
With my flight home just a couple of hours after the Norwich game, I joined the locals at Mike’s Place, one of my favourite haunts in Tel Aviv, where the only disappointed man in the bar was Manchester City fan Akiva Lieberman. He cheered both City goals ferociously, but like the Canaries’ back-line, had no answer to the sheer brilliance of Raheem Stirling and was forced to drown his sorrows in tequila. L’chaim Akiva.
* It’s squeaky-bum-time at Wingate & Finchley right now. The Blues must either better East Thurrock’s result, or win and hope that Enfield Town lose on the final day of the season, in order to avoid the drop back to Ryman League Division One. Good luck lads.
* Newcastle fan Gideon Mark hasn’t had much to cheer about this season, but he was grinning from ear to ear after a chance meeting with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich at the Royal Beach Hotel in Eilat.
