Shahar Peer is safely through to round two after beating former doubles partner Sania Mirza in the ladies singles at Flushing Meadows.

Victory came as a relief for Peer who had crashed out in the first round at Wimbledon and the French Open earlier this year.

Peer, 24, bounced back after losing a first-set tie-break to win 6-7, 6-3, 6-1.

A meeting with former world No. 1 Roger Federer was the prize awaiting Dudi Sela following his first-round win in the men's singles.

Sela, 26, came from two sets down to beat world No. 35 Thomaz Bellucci.
