A brave display from Shahar Peer was not enough to stop Venus Williams from powering through their fourth round clash at Flushing Meadows.

Seeded 16 at the US Open, Peer succumbed to third seed 6-7, 3-6 as she suffered her sixth straight defeat against the collusus.

Peer broke Venus Williams to lead 3-2 in the first set but failed to hold her serve before losing 7-3 in the tie-break.

The Israeli was encouraged by her performance in New Tork, and will also take encouragement from a third round 6-4, 6-4 victory over 19th seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy.

Peer said: “Venus usually murders me but this time I played good tennis and it was an even fought contest.”
