Lara Nyman expressed disappointment after finishing fourth at the Under 20 World Triathlon Sprint Championships in Budapest.
Nyman, 18, had been aiming for the podium place but atrocious conditions made the ground marshy and caused a number of mishaps on the flat biking course. Nyman had an unusually poor swim to emerge from the water in seventh position. At 14 degrees, the water was so cold that the competitors were not even allowed their customary warm-up. However, an excellent bike leg saw her overtake all but the leaders and she maintained her form on the 5km run which took place along the Danube, finishing in the city centre. Perhaps more galling for Nyman in finishing fourth was that she was able to see the bronze medallist just ahead.
Nyman's time ranked her 12th overall in both the junior and senior age categories. She said: "I'm disappointed but to finish fourth in my first world championships is not as bad as finishing last, so I am quite pleased." Nyman took up the sport eight years ago and although the 2012 Olympics in London remains a dream, she believes that a place in the GB squad in 2020 is a realistic target.
