Team Maccabi GB experienced a disappointing start at the Pan American Maccabi Games in Mexico.
July 9, 2019 11:42The O35 team suffered defeats in their first two matches. They were edged out 2-1 by hosts Mexico and then lost 1-0 against the USA - beaten by a wonder strike in a game they dominated possession.
A spokesman for the team tweeted: "Another cracking game but sadly lost out to a worldie of a strike by Team USA. Dominated but just couldn’t get the goal we deserved. Boys are gutted but we go again tomorrow vs Chile and hope to find our shooting boots."
The O45 succumbed 1-0 against Mexico but they registered their first point in the next match against Peru. Paul Lenchner and Simon Corney, the former Oldham Athletic chairman, were the scorers.
There was also disappointment for the O55 side who went down 2-1 against Brazil. And a 1-1 draw against Chile means they can no longer win a medal.
However, there was good news in the tennis where Samantha Cohen won a gold and silver medal in tennis.
There was heartbreak for O55’s football team. In a game they needed to win to secure a place in the bronze medal match, they came from 0-2 down at half-time to draw 2-2 against Mexico. GB's fate was sealed when they had a last-minute goal disallowed, meaning they finished on same points as USA (who scored a last-minute winner against Chile) and missed out on the bronze medal match by virtue of USA scoring one more goal.
