Yarden Gerbi made sporting history after becoming the first Israeli to win a judo world title.

Gerbi, 24, claimed the women's under-63 kilo category crown at the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro following a powerful performance in which she registered five consecutive ippons.

The world no. 1 got off to a flying start, beating Karla Catota Quijano of El Salvador after just 45 seconds.

Italy's Valentina Giorgis lasted slightly longer, with Gerbi winning her second round contest in three minutes.

Gerbi stormed into the semi-finals, overcoming Tina Trstenjak of Slovenia in two minutes. Kane Abe of Japan succumbed after inside three minutes to set up a final against Clarisse Agbegnenou. And just 43 seconds later Gerbi was crowned world champion.
