A goal of the week contender from Brady keeper Oli Colmans – that travelled the distance of the pitch – was clearly the icing on the cake as the Edgware club moved top of the JC MSFL Division One with a 6-0 demolition of Montana Boca United A.
Having come close to scoring earlier in the game, the stalwart keeper claimed the game’s final goal with a wind-assisted drop-kick that flew over stranded Montana keeper Lee Duskwick before nestling in the net for his first goal in senior football.
On a boggy pitch in Bushey, Brady took early control of the game with youngster Steven Field again pulling the strings in the middle of midfield, hitting the post early on after an impressive run.
Brady welcomed back Lee Platt from injury and he twice came close to opening the scoring, firstly dragging the ball just wide, and then forcing a great save from Montana goalkeeper Lee Duskwick.
Field continued to dominate the midfield, forcing a good save after a long solo effort, and the resulting corner saw mark Smith’s header well saved again by Duskwick. The resulting corner saw Jason Sears rise highest only to see his header sneak wide.
The breakthrough finally came, courtesy of the man of the moment Josh Hershman, who took his tally to 12 goals in five games, after a fantastic ball from Ryan Fox split the Montana defence; Hershman brought the ball down on his chest and rolled the ball into the bottom corner.
The second half started much the same as the first with Brady pushing to double their lead, and the second goal came through Mark Smith who was bullying Montana’s defence all morning. He rounded the last man and dispatched his shot into the corner past the ailing keeper.
With Brady kicking with the wind in the second half, goalkeeper Oli Colmans’s long ball bounced over Duskwick, and hit the post only for both Hershman and Smith to miss glaring chances. This was the second time Colmans had hit the post.
Late on in the second half Nick Stern picked up the ball in his own half, strode forward, beating two men in the process, and the last two parted like the red sea for him to slot the ball home.
Although only 3-0 at this point, it could have been double figures. There was time for Colmans to have another attempt at goal this time Smith latched onto the long kick, rounded the keeper, and stabbed home for his second of the game.
With Montana tiring, Field went on a mazy run to make it five, and a strong Brady performance front to back was rounded off by Colmans’ late punt.
Brady manager Josh Rosenfeld told JC Sport: "This was a fantastic result and it's very pleasing to start the new year as we left off last year.
"On a tricky pitch in poor conditions we manage to still play the football everyone loves to see and created chance after chance.
"Anyone watching the game will tell you that we should have at least got in to double figures. All I can say is we only go game by game and look forward to next week. We have a huge superb squad and everyone involved is the reason why we are winning week after week.
"We knew at going in 1-0 at half time that they were lucky for it not to be more, but we only needed a quick start to the half and their heads would drop.
"I want a special mention once again to Steven Field who dominated the game in midfield and is progressing week after week and Oli Colmans has done the unthinkable by scoring from a drop kick. Not only because he can't usually kick, but its pleasing as this has happened in the opposite direction before!
"All in all a great result and no injury scares. Other positives were that Lee Platt and Zak Presky playin g their first game in over two months and looking sharp."
