The news that Luis Fernandez will lead Israel into the 2014 World Cup qualifiers will please many supporters of the national team, but not Eyal Berkovic.
Regarded as one of the best footballers the country has produced, Berkovic, the former Manchester City and Celtic playmaker, was hopeful of replacing Fernandez when Israel's Euro 2012 campaign ended but he will have to wait a lot longer now.
My advice would be for him to get a good club job to boost his CV so next time the national job comes around, he'll stand a better chance.
● Dudi Sela's fall from grace means that he will come up against some big-hitters in the Wimbledon qualifiers. I've watched him at the All England Tennis Club for the past few years and believe that he must be more aggressive on what is one of his least favourite surfaces.
● MAL vice-captain Mark Landau is my Player of the Month. The left-handed opener has already registered two centuries this season. He followed up his 158 with an unbeaten ton in the cup win over Chigwell & Hainault. A modest Landau said: "Chigwell's bowlers would be the first to admit that they offered me a lot of freebies to hit."
● Following his heroics at the Welsh Open, where he fired two holes-in-one, I've had a few enquiries asking whether or not golfer Elliot Saltman is Jewish. I can reveal that his father's father was.
● Injury-plagued Israeli Gil Blumenshtein has been released by Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
● An Over-50s Maccabi Masters team will play a friendly against the Garston Vets League on August 21.
