Beitar Jerusalem owner Eli Tabib insists he has no option but to sell the club following the disgraceful scenes which marred the club's Europea League match against Charleroi in Belgium.
Thursday night's tie was disrupted by unsavoury scenes as Beitar fans threw smokebombs on to the pitch, while home goalkeeper goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau was hurt by an object thrown from the crowd.
"I am ashamed ... I have decided to end my involvement with Israeli soccer and am returning to the United States ... I will appoint a trustee to run the club until somebody is willing to buy it," Eli Tabib said in a statement.
Beitar lost the match 5-1 and had two players sent off. Dovev Gabay registered for Beitar.
The teams are scheduled to meet the return leg in Jerusalem next week.
Meanwhile, Hapoel Beersheba drew 1-1 against Thun who equalised in the 87th minute.
