Avram Grant in line for Poland job

Avram Grant, the former Israel and Chelsea manager, will be interviewed for the vacant Poland national football coach role, the JC understands.

Sacked by Chelsea three days after the Champions League final defeat against Manchester United, Grant is the son of Polish-born Meir, who fleed the country in 1941 to escape Nazi occupation.

Grant, 54, has been linked with several club and national posts including FA Cup winners Portsmouth and the Bulgarian national team. Last week we reported that he is the preferred choice of IFA chairman Avi Luzon for the Israel job.

The recent 3-0 defeat against Slovenia effectively eliminated the Poles from World Cup qualifying contention, and Grant has been labelled as “an excellent candidate,” according to Michal Listkiewicz, the former president of the Polish FA.

PZPN president Grzegorz Lato said: “For sure we will meet and see what Mr. Grant has to say.

“I spoke to him about the job very seriously after the World Cup in Germany, but ultimately we decided to go with Leo Beenhakker. Today, Grant is an even better candidate, as leading Chelsea in the meantime has given him great experience,” said Listkiewicz.

“Avram even speaks a little Polish,” says Listkiewicz.
