Valentine’s Day is upon us, so do you know what that means? So is Galentine’s Day. In fact, Galentine’s Day falls on 13 February, taking the phrase “sisters before misters” quite literally as it lands exactly one day before Valentine’s.
Whether you’re single, married or anything in between, sisterhood and female friendships get us through some of the weirdest and most vulnerable moments in each stage in life. Galentine’s Day is intended to celebrate those platonic friendships and the women in our world that inspire us.
If you don’t yet have a Galentine’s Day tradition with your gal pals, 2024 is the year to introduce one. Let’s break down some ways we can celebrate Galentine’s Day this month.
Host a Galentine’s Day Party
Take advantage of that Valentine’s Day décor all over the high street shops and deck out your place with the heart aesthetic – but with a twist. Whack on a Spotify playlist that sets the mood for a session of showering friends with love but also reminiscing the history of each other’s dating lives. If we can’t laugh at the messy dates we’ve all been on, then why did we even bother? Get yourself a group of mates together for a good old chuckle.
Pre-work Breakfast
Set yourselves up for a mega day by meeting your group of friends before work for a weekday breakfast. It may feel like a chore when your alarm goes off earlier, but once you’ve got yourseldf up and out to meet your girlies in central London the endorphins will start flying. It’s like Sex in the City but British.
Girls Trip
OK, let’s be real, any woman who can get a girls trip organised on a WhatsApp group would give a world leader a run for their money. Life is a long list of priorities and getting girls all together for a holiday tends to fall to the bottom. Let Galentine’s Day be the festivity that puts quality time with girlfriends at the top. Whether it be a cheeky city break by jumping on the Eurostar to Paris or a road trip to the Cotswolds, I can tell you for free that there is no trade-off for time with friends and making memories to reminisce on in years to come.
Gift Giving
If your mates’ schedules don’t align, then send your girlies some love hearts in the post. Or drop round some flowers to show how much you appreciate them. Even some cookies or cupcakes would go down a treat. It doesn’t need to be anything expensive or fancy, a thoughtful pressie always goes a long way.
Romantic relationships are like featured characters in a musical. They pop in and out of scenes/our lives (of course until we meet our soulmate/leading man). But your friends, they are in every scene. The supporting characters, cheering you on, picking you up when things don’t go to plan and helping move the narrative along. Galentine’s Day is dedicated to those friends who stay for the whole damn show. Beginning, middle and end.
