Though it was made in 1995 the hit movie Clueless has never been forgotten by the public. The combination of a smart script inspired by Jane Austen, Californian rich-kid style and a heroine in the form of Cher Horowitz, played by Alicia Silverstone, Silverstone’s Cher was an early iteration of the naive optimism Margot Robbie brought to her equally blonde Barbie.

Both have made an indelible impression on the collective consciousness. But as Clueless this week reaches the West End in a new musical version of the film, the film’s writer and director Amy Heckerling is at last ready to confirm what many always suspected, that Cher is Jewish.

“If I had said ‘This is the story of a Jewish girl’ the studio would have said no,” says Heckerling speaking on video call from a London hotel. This hotel has been her base for the last three months while she adjusts the musical’s script before Rachel Kavanaugh’s production lets in the critics and joins such other American high school hits as Mean Girls and Heathers.

Hollywood has many Jewish people. But there is also a little bit of self-loathing
