Unlike womenswear trends, which change so fast it is hard to keep up, menswear trends tend to evolve gradually, which means similar looks are often reworked from season to season.

But that's no excuse, chaps, to ignore the trends entirely, so we have been talking on your behalf to Sarah Cook, a freelance fashion stylist and writer, who has seen the menswear collections and distilled their essence for the JC's male readers.

"Of the trends which emerged from the autumn winter catwalk shows for 2011, the strongest are a 'great outdoors /alpine' look that has a luxurious feel with fine knitwear and shearling," says Sarah.

"Alongside this are plaids and checks, which have been visible for the last two to three years and continue this season."
