Holidaymakers going on a Kenyan safari land at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta Airport then catch a connecting flight from the domestic Wilson airport the next morning.
The city's new five star hotel, Sankara provides an agreeable stopover in the developing Westlands region and offers mod cons in contemporary architecture with clean lines and a touch of minimalism.
Barely eight months old, everything from its marbled floor reception to the chandeliers gleam, including modern artworks by local artisans, scattered around the hotel. The name Sankara means bliss, which they say they want to achieve.
Okay, it has a petrol station in front of it and is surrounded by city chaos, but on the other hand it is close to various shopping malls including Westlands, markets and the city centre.All 156 rooms have flat-screen TVs, DVD players with surround sound and feature wood panelling, beige carpets and earthy tones. All have ensuite marble bathrooms with walk-in rain showers and separate baths.
Security is high with guards on every floor and several at the front to check car boots. Staff are well briefed and show a surprisingly proactive attitude.
The first floor has a food and wine bar, and three restaurants, ranging from bistro to fine dining. The top floor has a bar and an open-air cantilevered swimming pool. It is a nice touch, but it offers a view of the car park when you swim to the nether region.
There's also a gym, spa and, assuringly, free internet.
